A LEGACY
OF CONNECTION
By Luke David Hunt, Associate Director & Senior Private Client Manager
at Blacktower Financial Management
Some legacies are built through ins琀椀tu琀椀ons. Others through culture, ideas or example. And occasionally, a legacy reshapes
the world so completely that it becomes invisible — woven into everyday life, rarely paused to be acknowledged.
GIVING THE WORLD THE INTERNET IS ONE OF THOSE LEGACIES.
It did not simply introduce a new technology. It changed how people communicate, learn, trade, collaborate and remember.
It collapsed distance, accelerated knowledge and altered the pace of decision-making across every industry and society.
En琀椀re genera琀椀ons have grown up assuming its presence, unaware that it was once an idea rather than an infrastructure.
The most remarkable aspect of this legacy is not scale, but intent. The internet was not created to concentrate power, but
to share it. It was designed to connect rather than control, to enable access rather than restrict it. That founding principle
con琀椀nues to in昀氀uence how innova琀椀on, openness and collabora琀椀on are understood today.
Of course, the consequences have been complex. Every transforma琀椀onal legacy carries unintended e昀昀ects. Yet the
enduring achievement lies in possibility — in crea琀椀ng a framework that others could build upon, adapt and extend in ways
never fully imagined at the outset.
LEGACY AT THIS LEVEL IS NOT ABOUT OWNERSHIP. IT IS ABOUT ENABLEMENT.
The internet’s true impact is measured not in code or infrastructure, but in what it unlocked: new forms of crea琀椀vity,
new economies, new voices and new ways of thinking. It shi昀琀ed power from the centre to the edges, allowing ideas to
compete on merit rather than proximity.
Few legacies are so expansive that they cease to feel personal. Yet behind this one sits a simple truth: one decision to
priori琀椀se openness over control can shape the future for billions.
THAT IS THE QUIET WEIGHT OF LEGACY.
Not recogni琀椀on. Not permanence of name.
But crea琀椀ng something so useful, so embedded, that the world cannot imagine opera琀椀ng without it.
