Business Etiquette in Dubai:
Dos and Don’ts for Professionals
By Jordan Pemberton, Interna琀椀onal Financial Adviser at Blacktower Financial Management
Naviga琀椀ng Dubai’s business landscape as a newcomer can be a rewarding experience, especially when you’re aware of
the cultural nuances and professional expecta琀椀ons that guide interac琀椀ons. In Dubai, business e琀椀que琀琀e merges local
customs with interna琀椀onal in昀氀uences, crea琀椀ng an environment where respect, formality, and rela琀椀onship-building are
valued. Here’s a guide to help you make a posi琀椀ve impression in Dubai’s dynamic business world.
PUNCTUALITY AND
FLEXIBILITY: STRIKING THE
RIGHT BALANCE
DRESS CODE:
PROFESSIONALISM MEETS
CULTURAL RESPECT
Punctuality is generally appreciated
in Dubai’s business environment, as it
re昀氀ects respect for others’ 琀椀me and
signals professionalism. However, it’s
also common for mee琀椀ngs to start
a few minutes late, especially when
senior o昀케cials are involved, as hierarchy
plays a signi昀椀cant role in determining
the 昀氀ow of a mee琀椀ng.
In Dubai, the dress code leans toward
formality, especially in business
environments. For men, suits and 琀椀es
are standard in formal se琀ngs, while
for women, dresses, suits, and blouses
with skirts or trousers are appropriate.
Modesty is important, and women are
advised to avoid revealing or overly
琀椀ght a琀re.
In Dubai, business communica琀椀on
o昀琀en follows a formal and courteous
style, with emphasis on politeness and
subtlety. When presen琀椀ng ideas or
o昀昀ering cri琀椀cism, professionals o昀琀en
use an indirect approach to avoid
causing o昀昀ence. Addi琀椀onally, while
English is widely spoken, it’s advisable
to avoid using idioma琀椀c phrases that
might not translate well.
Do: Aim to arrive on 琀椀me or a few
minutes early to mee琀椀ngs. Being
punctual establishes reliability and
respect for your colleagues or clients.
Do: Choose a琀re that is modest and
conserva琀椀ve.
Covering
shoulders
and knees is advisable for women in
business se琀ngs, and men should avoid
overly casual looks, even in relaxed
environments.
Do: Prac琀椀se ac琀椀ve listening, maintain
eye contact, and be mindful of tone. A
warm, respec琀昀ul tone is appreciated,
and showing genuine interest in your
colleague’s perspec琀椀ve will be wellreceived.
Don’t: Dress too casually unless
explicitly instructed, as doing so may
be seen as disrespec琀昀ul, especially in
mee琀椀ngs with Emira琀椀 professionals. In
some se琀ngs, removing your suit jacket
may be acceptable, but it’s best to
gauge the room and follow others’ lead.
Don’t: Use overly direct language or
rush through introduc琀椀ons. In Dubai,
taking 琀椀me to greet others properly
and allowing the conversa琀椀on to
昀氀ow naturally are valued prac琀椀ces,
helping to foster mutual respect and
understanding.
Don’t: Appear impa琀椀ent
if
a
mee琀椀ng doesn’t start immediately.
Conversa琀椀ons may begin informally
before moving to formal discussions,
allowing for rapport-building, which is
highly valued in Emira琀椀 culture.
“Respect, patience, and cultural
understanding are the pillars of
business etiquette in Dubai.”
