THE APPEAL OF REMOTE PLACES
By Karen Ogilvie, Director & Head of Group Compliance at Blacktower Financial Management
WHY HIGH PERFORMERS INCREASINGLY SEEK
ISOLATION, NOT EXCESS
For much of modern life, success has been associated with
proximity — to people, to opportunity, to s琀椀mula琀椀on. Ci琀椀es
grew denser. Schedules 昀椀lled. Visibility became currency.
Access was equated with advantage.
Yet an interes琀椀ng shi昀琀 has taken place. Increasingly, those
opera琀椀ng at high levels are choosing distance over density,
quiet over constant connec琀椀on, and isola琀椀on over excess.
Remote places, once seen as imprac琀椀cal or peripheral, are
becoming deliberate des琀椀na琀椀ons.
THIS MOVEMENT IS NOT ABOUT ESCAPE. IT IS
ABOUT CONTROL.
High performers are rarely lacking in s琀椀mula琀椀on. Their
days are characterised by decision-making, communica琀椀on
and complexity. A琀琀en琀椀on is con琀椀nuously demanded. Over
琀椀me, this creates cogni琀椀ve noise. Remote environments
o昀昀er something increasingly scarce: space to think without
interrup琀椀on.

Isola琀椀on removes layers of distrac琀椀on. Without constant
signals compe琀椀ng for a琀琀en琀椀on, thought deepens. Perspec琀椀ve
broadens. Decisions are made with greater clarity. What
ini琀椀ally feels like absence — fewer people, fewer op琀椀ons,
fewer demands — quickly reveals itself as presence. Time
feels less fragmented. Awareness sharpens.
Remote places also impose a di昀昀erent rela琀椀onship with pace.
There is less urgency to respond, less pressure to perform.
Days are shaped more by natural rhythms than by schedules.
This recalibra琀椀on allows recovery, not just physically but
mentally. For those accustomed to constant mo琀椀on, this
slowing can be profoundly restora琀椀ve.
Importantly, the appeal of isola琀椀on is not rooted in austerity.
Remote does not mean uncomfortable. Advances in
infrastructure, technology and design have rede昀椀ned what
remoteness looks like. Secluded loca琀椀ons can now o昀昀er
re昀椀nement without intrusion, comfort without crowding, and
quality without spectacle. The dis琀椀nc琀椀on lies not in what is
available, but in what is inten琀椀onally absent.
