WHEN EXPERIENCE
BECOMES AN
ADVANTAGE
By Tim Govaerts, Associate Director & Senior Private Client Manager at
Blacktower Financial Management
WHY LONGEVITY IMPROVES JUDGEMENT, RISK AWARENESS AND
OUTCOMES
Experience is not simply a ma琀琀er of 琀椀me served. Its value lies in perspec琀椀ve, the
ability to interpret events in context rather than isola琀椀on.
In 昀椀nancial planning, longevity exposes advisers and clients to repeated cycles of
change. Markets rise and fall, narra琀椀ves shi昀琀 and uncertainty reappears in di昀昀erent
forms. Experience allows these pa琀琀erns to be recognised rather than reacted
to, reducing the likelihood of decisions driven by short-term noise or emo琀椀on.
Judgement improves through this exposure. Having navigated previous periods of
vola琀椀lity, experienced advisers are be琀琀er able to dis琀椀nguish between temporary
disrup琀椀on and structural change. They understand that not every market
movement requires ac琀椀on, and that restraint can be as valuable as interven琀椀on.
This measured approach supports consistency and helps avoid over-correc琀椀on
during uncertain periods.
Risk awareness also deepens with experience. Over 琀椀me, it becomes clear that
risk extends beyond market movements alone. Concentra琀椀on risk, in昀氀exibility,
behavioural bias and the risk of failing to adapt as circumstances change all play
a role. Experience encourages a broader view of risk and supports planning that
addresses these factors holis琀椀cally.
As priori琀椀es evolve, experience also supports be琀琀er alignment. Strategies that
made sense at one stage of life may need adjustment later on. Longevity enables
advisers to reassess objec琀椀ves with clarity, ensuring plans remain relevant as
goals, income needs and personal circumstances change.
Ul琀椀mately, outcomes improve when decisions are made within a long-term
framework. Experience encourages discipline, pa琀椀ence and consistency, principles
that rarely a琀琀ract a琀琀en琀椀on but play a decisive role in long-term success.
As Blacktower re昀氀ects on forty years of advising clients, experience is recognised
as an important element in suppor琀椀ng the planning process. Not because the
past is repeated, but because it informs be琀琀er decisions for the future.
In an environment that con琀椀nues to evolve, experience does not limit progress. It
can provide the context needed to navigate change with con昀椀dence and clarity, to
help ensure that advice remains e昀昀ec琀椀ve not just today, but over the years ahead.
